Who's Buying Household Furnishings, Services, and Supplies

The eighth edition of Who's Buying Household Furnishings, Services, and Supplies is based on unpublished data collected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics' 2008 Consumer Expenditure Survey. It examines how much Americans spend on their homes by the demographics that count: age, income, high-income households, household type, race and Hispanic origin, region of residence, and education. To round out the spending picture, it also presents who-are-the-best-customers analyses of the data, showing the demographics of spending at a glance. The items examined in this report fall within the categories of furniture, floor coverings, household textiles, appliances, and miscellaneous household equipment such as lamps and power tools. How much is the cost of your groceries, personal care, and household supplies per month? What do you spend approximately on groceries for one person and your personal supplies (shampoo, etc) and household supplies (like trash bags, etc) for one month? And please name your State, okay?
William mine has skyrocked in that time too. That's why I was asking.

Well, I have to divide by 2 since there are 2 of us. Groceries $ 300, so about $ 150 and that does include supplies like trash bags, paper towels, toilet paper, etc. Health and beauty aids run about $ 150, so about $ 75 per person. And, yes, looking back at 2008, we ran an analysis and our groceries increased 35% and health care items about 30%. I am in CA.

amounts reflect costs for a family of 5:

groceries + household supplies + shower "fixins" = approx. 800/mo

texas (houston area)

for a random side note:
went to wal mart and a pound of tomatoes was $ 1.00 last wk., this wk. it's $ 0.49. other groceries were cheaper, too. Am wondering if there's something going on w/ prices lowering/maybe it's just a special wk. for discounted prices (not just a few things, i notice A LOT of typical foods i buy were not their reg. prices from the past few mos). would be a welcome change if prices in food are depreciating--but me thinks it's too good to be true, and just like gas prices will rise again. but this time ppl will have adapted to $ 3.00+/gal. gas. I feel for those who lost their jobs and have had big, life changing events.
------------------------------
also live in the Sacramento/N. Ca area for a few mos./year and it is of course higher there. I would estimate it's about 30% higher to buy the same things in wonderful, wacky CA. definitely not too sad about having made the move to Tx...now only if I can get to italy and drop dead of old age there (or a heart attack due to the shock of the euro exchange)!
