Hi,I did the following:
Rust on Hedge / Bush Trimmers?I recently prchased some hedge trimmers just the normal manual kind (they look like big scissors, non-electic etc) but I left them outside for about a month an I think they got wet now they are all rusted and don't cut that good at all any more, they are only about 2 months old but are all rusted now.
Any one have any ideas how to sharpen and clean of the rust on these things so I don't have to go buy another pair.

What my dad does with that is to run it on a grinder. It sharpens it and takes the rust off all at once. Then he rubs it with oil on a paper towel to protect it against rust in the future. If you can't do that, steel wool can take most rust off - just be sure you get all of it before you oil it or it won't do any good. That help?

This will take some elbow grease.
Get some oil, like WD40, and some steel wool, 00 (that is the size), Wear thick leather gloves and eye protection. Spray the tool or the steel wool with the oil and scour away the rust. Use a clean rag to wipe away the rusty, oily mess and keep working at it. For sharpening, I use a Dremel tool, but I have also used a kitchen knife sharpener.
In the gardening section of the hardware store they sometimes have a special sharpener specifically for shear type tools. I have one of those as well, they all work.
For maintenance of your tools: Get a 5 gallon bucket, fill it with play sand from the hardware store then pour in a quart or so of motor oil. Mix well, and shove your steel tools into it. Keeps rust off, makes the metal shine and drives away any moisture that may be lurking around on the metal parts.
I have left my tools out too, and learned the lesson of putting my tools away the hard way, I guess that you have to learn the hard way too. Bummer.

I agree totally with kj, learn to take care of your tools.
