Wrist Style Blood Pressure Monitor

Hi,I did the following:
How reliable are drug store blood pressure monitors? The doctor has repeatedly taken my wife's bp. It is always about 160/90. But the drug store machine says it's in the high 120's - high 130's/low 80's. That's a significant difference.

I was under the impression that the drug store monitor was tested regularly for accuracy.

Don't use blood pressure gauges in supermarkets or pharmacies; they're rarely well maintained.

I would buy one to use at home. The doctor can write out a script, and most likely your insurance will pay for it. The drug store machines are properly maintained so, you may get a false reading. At least if you had one at home, you can take it into your doctors office and let them check to see if it is accurate.

how and when do you take the readings at home? when your wife is relaxed, after work or if she had another excitement. all these things can influence the BP reading.
Buying or not buying one at a supermarket or not. here we (i live in russia) have a law that these things are not allowed to be sold in supermarkets. just at chemists or specialty stores. and here the chances are very good that you do not get a machine that is 'made somewhere' and fails to work properly.

It depends which piece of equipment is being used.

Digital blood pressure monitors (press a button, get a reading) are notoriously inaccurate and will sometimes gives completely erroneous readings.

The old, analogue blood pressure cuffs (properly called sphygmomanometers) are far more accurate and are used as the 'gold standard' for testing blood pressure. In the case of a doctor getting an incorrect or suspicious reading on a digital blood pressure monitor he or she will refer to the sphygmomanometer as a backup device.

The device itself is very accurate but it depends on who is listening to it - if they aren't paying attention they can get a false reading. The gauge on a sphygmo will 'bounce' when it hits systolic pressure, and will pulse in time with your heartbeat until it hits diastolic pressure. While this is by no means an accurate method of determining blood pressure (that has to be done using a stethoscope) it is useful for a quick-and-dirty guide to BP.
