Hi,I did the following:
how accurate are pedometers that measure calories burned?I want to buy a pedometer to check how many calories I burn on my everyday walks. But I feel skeptical. How do I know if the machine is right? How do I know its true when it says "you burned 100 calories"? Can I rely on a machine like that?

Well the only problem with the pedometer is the sensitivity. If you are wearing it the entire day it may have a false reading because as long as it's moving (swiveling in your chair at work) it will count that as being active when in reality you really aren't.

It depends on how accurate the info you put in it is, and how high end it is of a pedometer.

Unfortunately it can never be accurate because it cannot calculate if you are exercising at an aerobic or anaerobic level or if your basal metabolism is fast or slow etc...
Calorie usage is also a very inaccurate science so it can at best be used as a very vague guideline. Rather buy a heart rate monitor and monitor if you reach your desired aerobic rate. It is much more effective as far as walking is concerned if your goal is to get fit or even for weight loss.

No, you can't rely on them unless you buy a very expensive model!
All a pedometer does is relate how many steps you take to an assumed calorie count. but your body can use three different fuels for exercise and each one has a different calorie count. So the machine is only "guestimating"!
You're better off sitting down and analyzing your diet. If you need to lose weight you need to know how many calories you need per day and how many you're actually ingesting.
Women need at least 1200 calories per day spread over 3 - 6 meals and men need at least 1500. But where those calories come from is critical - a couple of cans of soda and a Snickers will give you more than that but won't help with weight loss or improve your health.
Then HOW you walk will determine how much fuel you use from stored fat OR from glucose OR muscle. Each of those fuels relate to different calorie counts with fat being the best way to lose lots of weight by using fat for fuel which burns more calories.
