Hi,I did the following:
Why do my light bulbs keep burning out?My light bulbs keep burning out over my kitchen table. Can there be something wrong with the light or the wiring? My landlord says that nothing can be wrong, but I beg to differ and I'm tired of changing the bulbs every few months.

Yes, the socket can go bad, I had it happen in one of my rentals. Check the contacts in the bottom of the socket, also. Sometimes grease and dirt can build up in there which eventually shorts out the bulb. I had the electrician change the socket and test the wiring and the socket was the culprit.

Depends. If you leave them on a lot it may be just the hours you are burning them. But where mine usually burn out the fastest is on the first floor ceiling where the kids bedrooms are on the 2nd floor. Or stair-wells. Answers: Vibration. The kids jump up and down. Run down the stairs ,etc. If this could be a possibility try using "long life bulbs", halogen, or my favorite CF to save energy. Make sure for safety you check the fixture and ensure those optional bulbs won't cause a fire.

Many of the new less expensive standard light bulbs are rated for only 400 hours to 650 hours. If these bulbs are on much they do not last very long at all. It could be compounded by vibration as someone else sugested but more likely it's just low quality bulbs. To get the most life out of your bulbs, look for 120 Volt bulbs instead of the normal 110 volt bulbs. The 120 Volt bulbs have a thicker filiment and last much longer and they are also are more risistant to vibration. Look at the hour rating of the next bulbs and buy the longest hour rating you can find.

The voltage should be checked as well as the ground. High voltage will burn out bulbs big time. I've measured 180 volts before at light fixtures. Is your landlord an electrician? If not, he should be sending one out to investigate. Even cheap bulbs will last 1000 hours.

Sockets do go bad from the expansion and contraction of heat released from the bulb, but there are a few things you can do safely while also saving money. The first remedy is to apply a small amount of vasoline around the base of the bulb and the tip. This often solves the problem of lights blowing and it also helps to unscrew them later down the road.
The second suggestion is to purchase florescent replacement bulbs. They last longer, burn less electricity and emit less heat while providing the same candle power as the older bulbs.
If it were me I'd try the vasoline first, then the florescent lights if the vasoline does not work. If they go bad you probably need to replace the sockets, or call an electrician.
What do you think? Answer below!
